UK bosses are to blame for Brits not fighting the flab, a survey has revealed. Research suggests that nearly half of all Brits, 43 per cent, blame the demands of the workplace for stopping them going to the gym. Chief Executive of the Fitness Industry Association (FIA), Andree Deane, said that research has confirmed that work commitments do interfere with a large percentage of employees' exercise habits in the UK. She stated "The implications of this for employers are extreme but it's the employees who risk an even worse fate." For employers, an inactive workforce can have a profound impact on their bottom line through lost productivity, increased absenteeism and reduced motivation levels but more importantly, the health of employees is being put in jeopardy.

In a world where health-care costs are taking an increasing bite into corporate profits, implementation of programs that show a reduction in these costs, or at least contain them, are a necessary consideration for any financially prudent organisation.
The information stated below comes from the U.S. Surgeon General's Report, 'Physical Activity and Health', which is a compilation of 30 years of U.S. research chronicling the benefits of regular exercise, and the harmful effects of sedentary living.
The Surgeon General stated that:
70% of all illnesses are due to lifestyle related causes; in fact one-half of all medical costs are attributable to illnesses that could be prevented.
Clearly, there's a need for corporations and businesses of all sizes to help employees establish a healthy lifestyle. Fortunately, more and more companies are implementing corporate fitness and wellness programs. Healthier employees positively impact companies in every respect:
- Lower health costs
- Lower employee turnover rate
- Improved productivity
- Improved employee morale
- Fewer medical claims
- Reduced absenteeism
= Positive returns on investment
An improvement in any of these areas will have a positive impact on the financial status of the organisation. The statistics suggest that companies can save hundreds of thousands of pounds simply by investing in their employees' health...
And the end result is a WIN/WIN situation for both employer and employee.

European Federation of Conference Towns is a membership organisation for around 100 European destinations with congress facilities. We organise every year a 4-day introduction seminar for beginners in the congress industry - the EFCT Summer School. For 3 years (Istanbul, Budapest and Malta), we have had the pleasure of having Cain on the faculty. His in-depth knowledge of physical training and its impact on body and soul has been a tremendous inspiration for students and teachers alike. His lectures as well as his early-morning exercises have been done in a fun yet serious way, and have given many of us the little extra we need to cope with jobs packed with long working hours and unhealthy diets. To have an expert available for guidance and training is quite unique, and has certainly made a difference to many of us. - Anne Wallin Rodven, Convention Director at VisitOSLO
