What is Yoga?

Originally developed in India, Yoga is a non-competitive, personal practice incorporating body, mind and spirit that has been around for over 2000 years.

Yoga works to transform both the body and mind, reducing physical and mental stress by strengthening the body with asanas (physical postures) and pranayama (breathing practices).

Unlike other types of exercise, Yoga is all about balance – balancing strength with flexibility, balancing body and breath.

Hatha yoga is a style of Yoga that focuses on aligning muscles and bones through the body. ‘Ha’ means sun and ‘Tha’ means moon.

Anyone can take part in some form of Yoga practice…you do not need to be flexible!

All classes will incorporate some asana work (physical postures), as well as a variety of breathing, relaxation and meditation techniques.

1-2-1 sessions will be tailored to the individual, based on their personal requirements.

What is Pilates?

Pilates was developed by a German man named Joseph Pilates and originally called ‘Contrology’. It was popular with gymnasts and ballet dancers.

The focus of the class as we know it today is to primarily strengthen the ‘core’ muscles that stabilize and support the spine, realign the body and help correct postural problems. When the core muscles are strong and doing their job, they work to support the spine. This is one of the ways Pilates can help people overcome back pain. As the trunk is properly stabilised, pressure on the back is relieved and the body is able to move more freely and efficiently.

Pilates is a conditioning routine that helps develop flexibility, muscle strength and endurance in the legs, abdominals, hips, arms and back. It will also help to improve balance and co-ordination.

Pilates brings mind and body together, focusing on concentration, balance, precision and breathing.

Pilates is now widely used by physiotherapists and Osteopaths.

Is it suitable for me?
Pilates is suitable for anyone, of any age!
Classes will have options all the way through; from beginner levels right through to advanced options. Intensity can be increased over time as the body becomes stronger, however the focus is always to work at your own level and listen to your body.

As the classes are mixed ability, anyone can start at any time. Modifications and suitable options will be given to cater for all levels.

I am a retired nurse/senior lecturer and I was given Holly`s contact details by a friend and former nursing colleague. I had considered taking up yoga for a time but was unsure about what type of class to take, as I am 66 years old and have health problems. When I emailed Holly I told her that I have long-standing rheumatoid arthritis and chronic lung disease, resulting in having half a lung removed in 1969.
Holly assured me that these were no barrier to taking up yoga and invited me to her gentle yoga class. I started the classes in September 2014. From the first session I was made very welcome, all of the other people were about the same age as me, some younger and some older. I was very unsure about how much I would be able to do, particularly getting down on the floor and getting up again. Holly said this would not be a problem, and that if I could not manage some of the moves there were alternatives offered.
The session was most enjoyable, the sense of peace and calm generated by controlled breathing and gentle moves was a revelation to me. I did get down on the floor and up again, with a little help from Holly.
I have now been attending the gentle yoga class weekly for nearly 6 months, and I am amazed by, and grateful for, the difference it has made to me. I really do enjoy it. I am able to do much more than I ever thought I could, even with some limitations in my abilities to move some of my joints. I look forward to the class every week, it`s a really great way to start the week.

Holly has been my Pilates instructor for over a year. When I started taking these sessions, I was a complete novice and since have become well trained for all the positions she asks me to do. Holly is an instructor who’s standards of training are nothing less than 110%. Every movement carried out is perfectly explained and demonstrated and is spoken with clarity and clear instruction. The benefits of the movements are explained for the well being of the class so that the body becomes stronger, more flexible, balanced and toned. holly is nothing less than a perfectionist in her field and encourages each person to achieve their maximum. For my personal practise, Holly instructed me privately. These one to one sessions gave me more confidence with knowing what I could achieve. For me personally, I have a ‘top instructor’, to the point where other trainers also attend the classes to gain top instruction as well.

Having attended Holly’s Pilates classes for the last couple of years, I have found that my posture, core strength and flexibility have improved dramatically. I leave her classes feeling calm, refreshed, invigorated and fully relaxed. This is mainly down to Holly and the way she takes the class. Holly is a fantastic instructor who ensures that everyone is able to work at their own pace and ability whilst being sufficiently challenged at the same time. She is always willing to find an alternative for a class member that is finding an exercise particularly uncomfortable, or for those that feel a certain exercise is not challenging enough. Overall, I would strongly recommend Holly’s Pilates classes to anyone that wishes to take up Pilates (or just to try something different!) as it is a great way to de-stress and Holly makes it so worthwhile and enjoyable!

I have been attending one of Holly’s Pilates classes for two and a half years now, and have really felt the benefits. I started classes as I entered my fifties, overweight, and not really having done much exercise since my teens. I was a little worried that I would be too unfit to go to any fitness class(!) but I was immediately put at ease. All the exercises have various levels of difficulty so that anyone can participate at a level appropriate for them. I have found it very rewarding to see myself progress and take on some of the more challenging levels over a period of time, as well as feeling fitter, stronger and more toned. Taking up exercise has also had a knock-on effect on my eating habits so that I have been able to lose quite a bit of weight. There is a very supportive and positive atmosphere at the classes. Holly is clearly an experienced professional, very knowledgeable, but at the same time managing to make the exercises accessible to everyone. She is very calm and clear in her instructions, always quick to offer to adapt exercises or offer alternatives to anyone with injury problems. She is unfailingly patient and good humoured. Whereas I once regarded exercise as a chore I now look forward to my weekly Pilates classes, and it has motivated me to have a more active lifestyle generally. I see this as a permanent change in my life.

As an exercise dodger I wanted to try something more relaxing to start off with so Pilates was a perfect choice. I work in an office and have suffered with neck pain for many years, Pilates has completely cured this and I no longer get any pain in this area. Holly is an excellent teacher with many years of experience, so you feel completely at ease. The classes not only help you get fit but they also calm your mind, so if you have a busy job this is the perfect release.

My physio recommended I do Pilates. The benefit to my back condition has been immense. The improvement compared to pre-Pilates is beyond belief. I feel as though I have my life back, my well being has improved so much and I am pain free most days. I do still have the odd day where my back is painful, but it is usually because I have done something I shouldn’t! I don’t believe it’s just the Pilates exercises, but the way Holly teaches it. You are so specific in how to do the exercises effectively Holly, that I truly believe it is your teaching that has had this effect and I can’t thank you enough.
